EDUCATION EARNS ****1/2 STARS
Quality of education is a major strength of St. Cloud. First consider the Osceola County school system which ranks higher than the Florida average in both school grade rank and high school graduation rate. The fact that Florida ranks 5th among the nation’s best school systems dispels the myth that Florida has inferior education. Now look at the St. Cloud area schools and you find an exceptional story. “A” schools abound. Elementary and middle schools are all “A” rated. The high schools have a report card with two “B”s and an “A”. Two Charter schools, one an “A”, the other a “B”, round out the picture making St. Cloud a very attractive place to educate one’s children. Two magnate schools, both ranked in the top 3% of all U.S. high schools, are available for St. Cloud high school students. Conveniently located just west of St. Cloud, TECO/PATHS offers both academic and technical/ career training. Academically, this A-rated school ranks number one in the county, with a 100% graduation rate and 99% of students each over a 2.0 GPA with 55% at 3.0 GPA or higher.
The technical programs include a highly ranked Licensed Practical Nurse program, Criminal Justice Academy, Automotive NATEF and AYES certificates, Information Technology certifications, along with Electrical Contractors and Industrial Trades Apprenticeship programs. A second magnate high school, also A-rated, the Osceola County School for the Arts, serves students interested in the arts, dramatic and visual. This newer addition to the District reflects the strong dedication to the cultural arts in education. High-ranking eighth grade students also have the option of applying to the District’s International Baccalaureate Program at Gateway High School in Kissimmee. In addition to the public school system, the option of choice and neighborhood proximity are provided by two Charter schools offering both elementary and middle schools for St. Cloud area residents. Several private schools also provide additional educational options.
Another standout educational feature is the reconstructed St. Cloud High School campus that was completed in 2011. Designed to resemble an Ivy League campus, with several new buildings including a performing arts center that seats 500, a multipurpose field house, a technical services building housing a state-of-the-art audio-visual communication lab and classrooms and the health sciences and nursing academy, St. Cloud High School will set a standard for high school campuses.
